soon as i realized scorpions spear is back back square instead of back x and every other traditional move has been changed i simply fealt disgusted. the only real mks ever have been 1 2 and umk3 and umk3 just barely...they did not give the true ol school arcade players wat weve begged for and that a 2d technical non button mashing pos. ed boon has once again created another tekken. only this time he made it with xrays and cool fatalities. god dammit plz for the love of god make the true fans of this game happy..i swear i feel like we the consumer just dont matter anymore..how hard is it to see that 1 of the highest psn downloads is mk2....motherfucking make the hd kollection and give us wat we want..i hate you ed boon. you gave me something special as a child and now you turn perfection to shit..

you have to understand, frznsldr.  we--the original fans--are no longer a priority.  hell!  we were never a priority, as evidenced by the fiasco that was MK4.  mortal kombat was always about the $--that's it; and the beloved digitized graphics were just a means to an end for boon and tobias, since neither of them could create animation.  MK2 is not complex, gameplay wise, it's just a stylistic pop-culture masterpiece.  the midway team kept adding features to keep fans engaged, but when the 3d boom hit, mk whored itself in that direction.  so it isn't surprising to me that now that SF has revitalized the 2d boom--oh look, MK is 2d again. LOL.  $$$

here's what i wrote on trmk:

with mk9, NRS is trying to serve two masters: the original fans and the current 3d fans, except the gameplay ratio is skewed toward providing the 3d fans with more familiar elements, while the aesthetic ratio is skewed toward trying to please the original fans. NRS can't afford to cater to the original fans, since we are not a reliable target-audience anymore (thanks MK4). the 3d fans have more mk games in their catalogue than the 2d fans, and they have supported mk for the last decade. if NRS just said "ok guys, we're going back to the original button layout and the original style of gameplay, plus a few added elements", then they would risk totally alienating the 3d fans. hence, MK9 is basically 3d mortal kombat on a 2d plane. the cost of totally remaking everything was probably a factor too.

but can you imagine if they had made the gameplay logic like the old games? lol. the 3d fans would get destroyed by the old 2d gamers, and NRS doesn't want that. that's why the jump kicks don't work like the old games, and why anti-air punches and roundhouses were nerfed, and why simple common sense things like you said: ermac TK slam jump kick, are not a priority. they are basically forcing the old fans to adapt to the 3d style games, instead of making the 3d fans re-adapt to an improved old style.

i'll re-post my theoretical mk moves list:

this is how a new 2d mk game should play, imo.

i made some theoretical gameplay elements that might work. mostly they're inspired by ex moves and wall and ground bouncing from sf3 and mvc3 and mk9.

so, in sf you can use two punches or two kicks to do an enhanced ex move right. and in mk9 you can also do enhanced specials, and in mvc3 there is a launcher button.

so i thought, you could have the original button layout: High punch, Low punch, Block, High kick, and Low kick. and you could have (High punch+Low punch) perform enhanced normals and specials and (High Kick+Low Kick) could also work. so for example, if you were sub zero and you had meter and did ice freeze motion+(High punch+Low Punch) you could do an enhanced freeze or something, which could do chip damage on block. in addition to this, i would keep the 3 to 4 button combo link starters like back+circle, triangle, square triangle, but i would make them chain faster.

i made up some theoretical combos too that would kinda be used like the launcher button in mvc3.

so like, Liu kang could do: enhanced flying kick(HK+LK) which could do a wall bounce, then standing punch juggle, bicycle kick, fireball (maybe enhanced). the interesting this is that (HK+LK) you could keep LK down and release HK to charge bicycle kick throughout this whole combo.

a combo system like that would add an ex element on top of the original game system, but it would retain the old button layout and it would keep the same intuitiveness and physics of the old games. the problem is that a combo like that would have no connection to the 3d games.

lastly, we have to face reality, NRS does not have the resources to fully create a NEXT-GEN MK game.  it just doesn't.  i've said this on other websites, but you'd need around 600-800 employees to make a next gen mortal kombat game; NRS has about 100-200.

Yup, it's a blast. It's MK 2/UMK 3 2011. Don't your love for the older games blind you to the greatness that is MK 9.
